Clinicians established ambulatory emergency care (AEC) as a way to provide emergency care outside of a hospital's regular bed foundation. Because AEC is delivered in a clinic setting, it can continue to operate during periods of high bed occupancy, relieving bed pressures and ensuring that selected patients receive prompt care. Ambulatory care nurses use evidence-based information across a variety of outpatient health care settings to achieve and ensure patient safety and quality of care while improving patient outcomes.
